My First Dive into the Tea World

Time to read:

1–2 minutes

I was lucky enough to attend the World Tea Expo last month in Las Vegas. I didn’t know what to expect, and I was a little worried that I didn’t even know what I didn’t know. I just had a general idea that if I wanted to continue on this tea journey, I needed a lot more knowledge, and this might be the place to get it.

The entrance to the World Tea Expo! (and the Bar & Restaurant Expo)

The first session I attended was called “The 10 Most Important Blending Herbs that you Need to Stock and How to Use Them,” by Sharyn Johnston, owner of Australian Tea Masters. I think it was a perfect way to start the expo.

She really emphasized keeping it simple. You don’t need expensive equipment or a million herbs to blend tea, you just need a bowl and your hands. I tend to get a little carried away and this place definitely had plenty to get carried away with! Starting off on this note was perfect.

Herbs were passed around for us to view.

Another session I really enjoyed was called “Reaching Out to an Untouched Audience: Welcoming the Next Generation of Tea Drinkers” by Justine and Melissa Duquette, the owners of Cup of Communitea.

They really gave us an opportunity to brainstorm ways we could reach out to the community to introduce tea. They’ve hosted tea parties for girl scouts and kindergarteners, brought tea to community events, and more.

This session was very interactive and they even gave us a place to take notes.

This was exciting for me to hear because part of the reason that I began this journey into tea was to try to make a positive impact. I would like to see beverages that aren’t sweetened become more popular.

It was nice to see that health was a big topic at the conference as well. It will be exciting to learn more about the connections between tea and well being as I continue this journey. Can’t wait to get started!
